"Net metering is an electricity policy for consumers who own, generally small, renewable energy facilities, such as wind or solar power, or uses vehicle-to-grid systems. "Net", in this context, is used in the sense of meaning "what remains after deductions" -- in this case, the deduction of any energy outflows from metered energy inflows. Under net metering, a system owner receives retail credit for at least a portion of the electricity they generate. The ideal has your existing electricity meter spinning backwards, effectively banking excess electricity production for future credit." wiki
Why net metering?
With the energy concerns these days and the need for diversification into viable alternative energy sources NET METERING is one powerful method to allow communities and individuals the means and chance to be part of the grand scheme of responsible energy production even without yet more "entitlements" to deal with energy costs and issues. It can empower individuals to become integral parts of the network supporting the energy needs of Alaskans.
This is something that must be put into place for a whole range of reasons personal, societal, economic, and environmental. I am neither a "tree hugger" or a rampant industrial expansionist. I am just a guy somewhere in between who sees a positive step in all directions with this and feel that some common ground needs to be found for fairness and empowerment all around.
Net Metering is NOT the utilities Subsidizing the RE producers! It IS an integral part of the whole for the future of responsible generation.
